How Does an Ultrasound Work?
It’s quite simple. An ultrasound is a safe and painless procedure that creates images with the echoes of sound waves. You will normally lie down on the examination table and an ultrasound tech will apply a special gel to your abdomen to help conduct the sound waves.
After applying the gel, the ultrasound tech will move an instrument called a transducer back and forth over the gel. Images are made by the sound waves reflected off your bones and other tissues. If desired, you can review the images and know where your pregnancy stands.
Do I Need An Ultrasound?
Yes — every pregnant woman does! Though pregnancy tests are an indicator of pregnancy, they are not a confirmation. Pregnancy tests can also give invalid results, and false positives can still happen. Home tests can produce incorrect results for other reasons as well. An ultrasound is the only method that can 100% confirm your pregnancy and determine how far along you are.
An ultrasound will determine three essential details of your pregnancy. They reveal the viability of your pregnancy (whether it’s healthy & growing), the location of your pregnancy (whether it’s growing within your uterus), and gestational age (how far along you are).
Ultrasounds can alert you to any possible pregnancy complications like ectopic pregnancy or miscarriage, which could eliminate the option of abortion for you. Another medical procedure would be needed for an ectopic pregnancy.
